Assessment & Reporting

Accurate Feedback to Parents

Assessment and Reporting
Assessment at Somerset House is continuous in nature, excepting for the final terms of Grade 6 and 7 where examinations are used. The reports provide information on what is learnt by the children as well as how each individual child manages the learning process.  Reports also refer to discipline, attitude and socialization.  This takes place on a termly basis in the Prep School from Grade 1 to 7.

Pre-Primary
In this section of the school reports focus on developmental milestones and achievements.  Early identification of learning difficulties is important and reports describe the social and learning experience of the child at school.  In Grade 0 school readiness is reported on in detail to provide accurate information to parents on this important concept.

Junior Primary
In this phase reporting takes place on a termly basis.  The reports indicate the level at which a child is operating as well as the ‘expected’ performance at age or point in time .  This enables parents to clearly understand where assistance may be required or where children are more competent.  The first and third reports are summaries while the second and fourth reports are more comprehensive in nature.

Senior Primary
Somerset House uses aggregates to show the level at which the class is working.  This allows the child's progress to be understood in context.  Levels of effort are indicated.  Somerset House uses symbols in the first term and percentages in the main academic subjects thereafter as more accurate feedback is possible by using this system.  Children are encouraged to use the more accurate data to set targets and objectives for themselves.  The comprehensive reports are detailed and provide useful information for parents and children alike.

Sport Reports
The children spend a considerable amount of time involved in outdoor activities and therefore receive a special report on their activities at the end of each season.  This includes information pertaining to fitness, attitude participation and skill.
